Greetings! (& an assignment of sorts)

Welcome everyone in my section of English 110.01!

This is to welcome you to the class blog. If you're not familiar with blogs, this will be a very gentle introduction. If you're quite familiar with blogs -- perhaps you keep one yourself -- this will be quick. A blog is a place where people can write posts that occur in a sequential or chronological order. Each of these posts then can be commented upon by the author and others.

The purpose of this blog is to have an out-of-classroom location to continue our discussions of how we see others in the interwebs discussing our course theme.

As I mentioned in the title ... there's a small assignment attached to this first post. To orient us with the class blog, I'm asking that each member become a member of this blog and post a comment on this post that includes one thing related to the course theme. It might be a link to something you found surfing the web. It might be a memory from childhood. Surprise us, but please do post so that we can make sure we haven't left anyone behind as we've stepped from Caldwell and Denney into the blogosphere.

  10. I heard this fun fact about a year ago, and I definitely think it relates to our course theme. Apparently, Professor Umbridge (from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) has been named one of the worst villains in children's literature. Here's a site that backs me up: http://upstartcrowliterary.com/blog/?p=994
I absolutely HATE this woman, so I'm glad this poll turned out this way.

We listened to this song in spanish class all the time, and everyone sang along. The song is Hero by Enrique Iglesias. I just think this song goes with our theme very well and anyone can relate to the powerful lyrics.

  13. These two videos are of two songs by Frank Zappa, who i consider to be a true musical anti- hero of his generation. First because of his complete mockery of pop music and culture (as shown by the first video), but also through his incredibly unique approach to music(as shown by the second). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bcBkwulvXs

The clip is kind of long but the most important part is 2:20-4:50

A boy a baby-sit for was watching this when I was over, and I was seriously disturbed. Scooby Doo and the gang used to be my heroes when I was younger because they're just regular kids that make a huge difference. This is just kind of sick what the show has become.

List of the top 10 most infamous cults. The leaders that kill their followers/nonbelievers or convince others to commit suicide are some of the worst villains in the world today, in my opinion.

From one of my favorite shows while growing up. Nigel Uno and his friends serve and protect kids from the cruelty and oppression of teenagers and adults. Lyrics and song by Jennifer Saunders - Holding Out For A Hero. Enjoy.

The link above is the trailer for "A Clockwork Orange." The protagonist, Alex, is a classic anti-hero character. He is a violent criminal who undergoes multiple rehabilitations before coming to a final resolution.
